gronlund dare partnership is a collaboration between Tara Gronlund and Robert Dare:

master of architecture intern architectTara Gronlund   ABID., M.Arch, IA AIBC

Tara has been practicing with gronlund dare design for 11 years.  Her design background, prior to co-founding gronlund dare partnership, includes both furniture design and work within the interior design profession.   She also founded/managed Western Canada’s largest architecture & design bookstore at Inform Interiors Inc. in 1997.

In parallel with her training and experience as an Intern Architect, she currently designs at the largest scale of gdp’s projects as well as providing clients with a focus on the smaller more intimate nature of design work.  She continues to extend her services through interior design and furniture design, and specializes in the specification and design of lighting and lighting systems.  Further, she manages gdp’s contract work from built-in millwork, to concrete and stonework elements, and to kitchen and bathroom design.  This leadership expertise allows Tara to complement the strengths and shared passions possessed by other members of the firm.

Tara also manages projects for gdp and is the firm’s main contact with municipal governments.  Through this role she has been able to develop good working relationships with municipal planning and building departments, resulting in an ability to efficiently manage building permit and bylaw variance processes.  Her project management ensures smooth and efficient operations, both within the office and outside where she guides projects such that clients are kept up to date, involved and taken care of.

Tara possesses an Associate Bachelor of Interior Design Degree (Kwantlen) and a Master of Architecture Degree (UBC) with honours standing.  Tara is currently an Intern Architect Associate member of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia.

Tara has won several design and industry awards for her interior design work as well as for her design work within gronlund dare partnership.

master of architectureRobert Dare  Dpl.Tech., M.Arch

Before co-founding gronlund dare partnership in 2001, Robert worked for Weryk Dare Design Studio and for Busby + Associates Architects (now Busby Perkins + Will).  While with these firms he worked on a range of projects from single detached houses, to multi-residential and mixed use complexes, to a foreign school and even a marine park and institute for the Adriatic dolphin in Riccione Italy.

Robert offers expertise in a multitude of aspects of building production.  He specializes in design but also anchors the firm regarding structures, construction processes, contracts and building science.  Robert’s knowledge of structures and building engineering allow gdp to work closely with structural engineers to achieve the highest design driven structural solutions.  Robert often provides gdp’s technical oversight of construction, overseeing contractors so that the design vision and its full detail are properly achieved.  Design operates at all scales, but the details of construction can make or break an otherwise good project.

Robert’s first interest is the practice of design.  He is most satisfied when drawing up, exploring and recording the development of forms and their appropriate alignment within a composed aesthetic composition.  He sees the technical realization of gdp’s work as essential because design success rests upon it.  Likewise, the success of design work rests in forms and solutions that fully meet a given client’s needs.  Any imposing of irrelevant forms, ideas, styles, etc. on a project (on a client) can only lead to failure.

Robert has a Bachelor’s Degree in Honours Philosophy to go along with his Diploma in Building Technology, Architectural Specialization (BCIT), and Master of Architecture degree (Toronto, UBC).   At BCIT he won the Architectural Institute of British Columbia Medal.  He went on to receive the first UBC Graduate Fellowship award in the Masters of Architecture program.   Upon graduation, he won the Royal Canadian Institute of Architects Honour Medal and The American Institute of Architects Henry Adam’s Gold Medal.

For both Tara and Robert, success comes from open-ended and innovative creation which takes into account the full multiplicity and complexity of the particular nature of each individual venture.  As a team they work closely together to achieve this kind of success; each contributing overlapping and balancing expertise to all of gdp’s work.
